We Will Focus On The Boost Of Solid Minerals Sector - Federal Govt

Efforts to grow and develop the country’s mining sector to make it contribute more effectively to government revenues got a boost with the launch of a N5 billion fund for artisanal and small scale miners recently.

Solid Minerals Sector Nigeria

Besides providing loans for the miners, the fund is seen as a means of bringing the hitherto unwieldy sector under a structured regime.
The launch was almost overshadowed by the euphoria of celebration bordering on the country’s exit from recession. But economic watchers believed the moment called for deep introspection to find ways to consolidate the efforts to diversify the country’s foreign exchange revenue base beyond oil. Developing the solid minerals sector is seen as a veritable step in this regard.
Exit from Recession
Data released by the National Bureau of Statistics penultimate Tuesday indicated that Nigeria’s economy was finally out of recession, as it recorded 0.55 per cent growth. Many celebrated this as an indication of success in the federal government’s efforts to revamp the economy.

Efforts to grow and develop the country’s mining sector to make it contribute more effectively to government revenues got a boost with the launch of a N5 billion fund for artisanal and small scale miners recently.
However, analysts at SBM Intelligence said, “A growth of 0.55 per cent does not only compensate for the lost ground, it is also below expectations considering the low base the growth is starting from.” They noted on the company website that the positive growth had been predicted by many analysts.
“It was expected, given how the negative growth had already caused the economy to contract, providing a low base for growth to start from,” SBM Intelligence analysts stated. They explained, “Coming out of a recession is not the same as the economy making a recovery. Nigeria is very far from recovering from the loss of the last 18 months. It will be more beneficial if the government and its agents shelve the unnecessary celebration and backslapping.”
They added, “We have wasted a crisis. We will do well not to waste the aftermath of the crisis. It is time to get to serious work.”
Solid Minerals to the Rescue
Economic analysts believe the mining sector is a good area to channel resources in the attempt to achieve economic diversification. They say optimal utilisation of the resources and opportunities that abound in the sector requires the concerted efforts of the different tiers of government.
According to the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, there are over 30 different kinds of solid minerals and precious metals, including Sapphire, Aquamarine, and Topaz, buried in Nigerian soil waiting to be exploited.
While Nigeria’s rich reserve of zinc found in several states is left untapped or left to illegal miners to exploit, the item has gained over 90 per cent in price in the global zinc market since January 2016. Zinc has fetched countries like China, Peru, United States, and Australia huge revenues, according to Investment News, an international journal published in Vancouver, Canada.
The roadmap for the growth and development of the solid minerals sector was first announced in August 2016 after a federal executive council meeting. Announcing the roadmap, Minister of Solid Minerals and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, had stated, “What distinguishes this roadmap, which builds on the old roadmap that was approved in 2012, is its determination to set up an independent regulatory agency, which investors have been insisting on that the ministry which has been serving as facilitator should not be the one that regulates them.”
Intervention Fund
The launch of the N5 billion fund for the benefit of small and medium scale miners, what we gathered, was in furtherance of the solid minerals development roadmap. The initiative, a collaboration between the Ministry of Solid Minerals and Steel Development and the Bank of Industry, will see both parties contributing N2.5 billion each to a N5 billion pool that will be made available to small scale miners in the country. Qualified artisanal miners would be allowed to access between N100, 000 and N10 million, while small-scale miners could get between N10 million and N100 million.
Before the latest initiative, the ministry had embarked on a systematic approach to confronting the challenges facing the sector. findings revealed that the ministry recently organised capacity building exercises for miners during which they were trained on various stages of mining and educated to impact on the environment positively in the process of mining.
Other efforts by the ministry to address the challenge of insufficient funding and lack of access to capital include the N20 billion from the mining sector component of the Natural Resources Development Fund and the $150 million from the World Bank to the Mineral Sector Support for Economic Diversification (MinDiver) programme.
Speaking at the launch, Fayemi noted that small scale miners accounted for the bulk of activities in the sector, adding that the launch of the fund was to address the challenge of insufficient funding and poor access to capital, a major factor militating against artisanal and small-scale miners. The minister said the BoI would serve as the custodian and manager of the fund, to be given to the artisanal and small scale miners at five per cent interest rate. He said with the appointment of BoI as the custodian and manager of the fund, it would facilitate financing of artisanal and small scale mining projects involving industrial minerals, precious stones, precious metal (gold), dimension stone and such other strategic minerals in Nigeria as would be approved by the ministry and BoI from time to time. Fayemi also stated that proper funding would help to integrate the artisanal and small scale miners into the formal sector, enhance their growth and development in a structured manner, and spur productivity and job creation in the mining sector.
“The Solid Minerals Development Fund is now spearheading the assembly of a $600 million investment fund for the sector, working with entities as the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority, the Nigerian Stock Exchange, and others,” the minister said, “In addition to the funding support from multilateral agencies, partnerships on technical cooperation.”
He added that several agreements had also been brokered or re-activated with foreign governments, including existing technical partnerships with the governments of South Africa, China, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and United States of America in line with the framework of Africa Mining Vision.
Analysts
Economic policy analysts have hailed the latest funding initiative. They say it is key to unlocking the huge potentials in the solid minerals sector to make it attractive to foreign investors. But many also say there is need for appropriate legal framework, like is the case in the oil and gas industry.
An economist and research analyst with the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, Rotimi Oyelere, said, “The mining sector is critical to diversifying Nigeria’s revenue base or sources of foreign exchange away from oil and hydrocarbon.
“The sector holds great potential for foreign exchange for the country; but we must make the sector attractive to foreign investors as was the case with the oil and gas sector and the only way to do that is to put in place a proper regulatory framework in place. The National Assembly should ensure that mining is taken off the exclusive list and placed in concurrent list.”
The governor of Taraba State, Darius Ishaku, spoke in a similar vein in an interview. Ishaku reiterated the need for proper legal framework that would remove mining licensing and administration from the exclusive list so that the states could be involved in mining administration in the country.
The governor said, “There are a lot of taxes which for now we are not getting. After agriculture, the second revenue endowment in the state is mining, and up till now we only have illegal miners, no thanks to lack of enabling law or laws that are not implementable.
“We have more than 30 different kinds of solid mineral resources in Taraba State, the seven rarest minerals are found here. Somebody like me has no business in Abuja going to look for subventions to pay workers’ salary if things were made to work properly.”

There Should Be Prosecution, Conviction of Human Traffickers In Host Countries - Abike Dabiri Calls Out

Director General, National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, (NAPTIP), Barr. Julie Okah-Donli has called for immediate prosecutions and convictions of human traffickers in the destination countries.

Abike Dabiri

She made the call in Abuja during a courtesy visit on Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, stressing the collaborative need on the two agencies to start making the demands.
Barr. Julie Okah-Donli, Director General, National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, (NAPTIP), has called for immediate prosecutions and convictions of human traffickers in the destination countries.
She made the call in Abuja during a courtesy visit on Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, stressing the collaborative need on the two agencies to start making the demands.
“I will like you to join your strong voice with mine, Nigerians are the victims, we need to change the narratives when they are sent back, the destination countries are telling me that their nationals are not involved. This is not true.
There is no way Nigerians will be operating in Italy or any other countries without their nationals assisting them. Nigerians are just agents taking the consignments to them in Europe”, she said.
Okah-Donli wondered how Nigerians will get into other countries without the collaboration of the nationals of those countries, stressing that the affected countries make it look like it was all Nigeria problems.
“It is high time for us as a country, to start making demands for the criminals in those destination countries to be prosecuted and convicted and not see it as Nigeria problems alone,
The biggest challenge to me has been the refusal of the destination countries to prosecute their own gangs, not being able to confiscate the assets and freeze the accounts of the criminal gangs that are based in their countries”, she added.
She, therefore, called for the repatriation of all assets, monies accruable to the Nigerian victims over there, saying when they are done with them, they just deport them without releasing all their assets to them.
“This is inhuman, callous and wicked. It is greater than slavery. They rape our boys and turn them to cargo. Every day, they are getting a new consignment. I want to see all these demands happening”, She said.

Following the recent dissolution of the Board and Management of the Rangers Management Corporation, among other decisions, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State yesterday inaugurated a 10-man Administrative Panel of Inquiry on Rangers International Football Club, “to carry out a diagnostic investigation of the problems of the Club”.

Enugu State Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi

The panel which comprises state chairmen of the Nigerian Bar Association and Nigerian Medical Association (NBA); Auditor General of Enugu State; representative of Nigerian Football Association; Chairmen of Enugu State Sports Writers Association and Rangers Supporters Club, State’s Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, among others, has Prof. Agu Gab Agu and Mr. Kennis Ngene as Chairman and Secretary respectively.
Gov. Ugwuanyi while inaugurating the panel, stated the measure was in keeping with his earlier resolve to “ensure the total revitalization and repositioning of the Club for future challenges especially, in the light of the internal strife and the mismanagement of the Club”.
The governor regretted that the ugly development had continued despite his administration’s best efforts and interventions, saying that it almost resulted in the Club’s relegation from the Nigerian Premier League during the just concluded 2016/2017 season.
According to the governor, the panel’s terms of reference are to “investigate and identify all the factors responsible for the continuing crisis in Rangers FC and recommend appropriate measures to curb them; articulate a road map for Rangers FC; determine and recommend appropriate amendments to the Rangers Management Corporation Law that would align it with the road map and specifically enthrone robust governance structure with clear reporting lines in keeping with international best practices and transparent accountability framework”.
Other terms include to “investigate any other relevant matter(s) that may come to the knowledge of the panel in the course of the inquiry, not covered under paragraphs (1) – (3) above and generally, in the light of its findings, make recommendations which the panel may consider appropriate for the total and sustainable revitalization of Rangers FC”.
The governor appreciated the Chairman and members of the panel for accepting to lend their services to the state and to the teeming fans and supporters of the Club and expressed confidence that they will deploy their wealth of experience, knowledge and competencies in the discharge of their duties effectively and satisfactorily.
Responding on behalf of other members of the panel, the chairman, Prof. Agu thanked the governor for finding them worthy to serve the state in that capacity, noting that Rangers FC means more than a football team to the Igbo people.
He assured the governor that they will deliver on their assignment in record time to ensure that the club receives the practical surgery it needs to bounce back to winning ways.

Hidden Reasons Why Banks Won't Grant A Loan For Business

It's almost impossible these days to keep a small business running with money from your own pocket. To meet up with financial commitments, entrepreneurs usually approach their banks for loans and it is rejected.

Hidden Reasons Why Banks Won't Grant A Loan For Business

So, below are 6 reasons you may not be granted a business loan request from any bank.

(1). Weakening industry
Operating a small business or startup in an industry that your bank perceives as weak or in fast decline will limit your chances of getting loans from your bank.

(2). Insufficient collateral
To get a loan, you need a commensurate collateral. This may not be a problem for large businesses that own large assets, but it can very difficult for small businesses.

(3). Lack of consistent cash flow
Banks tend to favour small and medium-scale businesses that have a steady flow of revenue coming in every month. If your business can't demonstrate this consistency, your loan request will be denied.

(4). Not enough operating history
Banks give preference to businesses with a track record of good performance. The truth is they don't want to fund a business that has been operating for a short time and hasn't sustained a certain amount of success and credibility.

(5). Personal guarantees
Your bank needs personal guarantees that you won't default when it comes to servicing your loan. This is a very risky position for enterprises struggling to stay on top of their monthly expenses.

(6). Economic concerns
Banks will not lend money to a business if they feel that the current economic conditions are unfavourable for getting the money back in a timely manner. This is simply because they do not want bad debts.

5 Important Ways All Men Must Build Themselves As Husbands

Like most things in life, marriages are not static. It may feel like there are times when we settle into comfortable seasons, but marriages aren’t like McDonalds’ chicken nuggets. If we ignore them for a week, they will not look the same when we come back.

5 Important Ways All Men Must Build Themselves As Husbands

Every marriage is growing stronger or weakening...

There is no exception. Marriages grow because the husband and wife are growing. Our marriages don’t exist in some strange limbo where they aren’t affected by our character, spiritual growth, and emotional maturity. Keep reading..

(1). Husbands Must Grow in Their Walk with Jesus
A man’s walk with King Jesus sets the direction for everything else in his life. It does not guarantee that you will have a great marriage, but it will be the foundation upon which all of your growth will be built. When you have a growing walk with Jesus, you will be actively putting to death. Your sin is not only a dishonor to your Lord and a hindrance to your walk, but it also has negative consequences in your marriage. Therefore, a growing Christian man repents and seeks to cut the things out of his life that don’t look like Jesus.

(2). Husbands Must Grow in Confessing Their Wrongs
We struggle in two areas with the sins that we commit against our wives. First, we possess blind spots the size of Texas and often do not realize how we have sinned. At other times, we feel justified in our sin against our wives because of something that we believe was done to us. We must work to remedy both of these issues because our sins against our wives hinder our walk with the Lord and create an enormous barrier to the growth of our marriages.

When you realize that you have sinned against your wife, do not seek to explain yourself. Do not wave it off with a quick “my bad” or a glib “sorry about that.” Instead, own what you have done and repent to the Lord. Then, make things right with your wife by confessing your sin to her. Instead of waving off your sin with half-hearted ownership of them, take responsibility and say, “I was wrong. Will you forgive me?” When you do this, you take responsibility for your own sin and then give her an opportunity to extend forgiveness.

(3). Husbands Must Grow in Showing Kindness
“Be kind to one another.” It is amazing how these simple words from Ephesians 4:32can change your marriage. Married couples often get into habits where they don’t treat each other with even the most basic courtesy. Harsh words get spoken without apologies, a lack of consideration becomes the norm, and the hostility begins to build.

Instead of falling into the trap we must seek each day by the power of God’s Spirit to show kindness to our wives. Kindness doesn’t mean simply being nice, but rather that in our words, deeds, and intentions we are working to be generous and considerate to our wives. This means that we think about how we can bless with our words and be helpful with our deeds. When kindness becomes the atmosphere of our marriage, it creates an environment in which marriage thrives.

(4). Husbands Must Grow in Their Commitment to Their Wives
In order to have a joyful marriage, you will have to change is drastic ways. I don’t mean that you will have to change your personality, hobbies, and likes. Your character, your words, your quick-temper, and how you respond to pressure will have to change. These changes require long looks in the mirror, hours in God’s word and prayer, and daily repentance.
If you are not committed to your wife until your dying day, this will be more than you can handle. The change can be so painful that you will want to reach for the eject button if you think there is one. Instead, lock out all of your other options and commit yourself fully to the wife of your youth. Every tear shed in repentance will be worth it.

(5). Husbands Must Grow in Offering Forgiveness
When it comes to our wives’ sins against us, we often have 20/20 vision and a photographic memory. When your wife slights you or responds to you rudely, you turn into a historian who is able to list dates and events that have offended you throughout the entirety of your marriage. “You never” or “you always” show up in our disagreements. Our conflicts aren’t about this issue at hand, but about this issue and every other one that you have had over the years.

We cannot follow Jesus or have a growing, joyful marriage while harboring bitterness and unforgiveness. Bitterness eats at us like cancer and causes serious resentment towards our wives. Instead of holding a grudge over past wrongs, we remember that “love covers a multitude of sin” and that we are to “forgive one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.” When our wives sin against us, we forgive freely from the heart, remembering that Christ has forgiven us. This means we let go of our anger and resentment and move towards reconciliation.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ provides the model for how husbands treat their wives. As Christ never leaves or abandons us, we stay faithful to our wives for the rest of our lives. We demonstrate the same kindness, mercy, and compassion to our wives that Christ has shown to us. Then we look to the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ, where he gave himself up for us, and sacrificially love as we’ve been loved.

Some Eating Stuffs You Probably Didn't Know Its From Africa

It might be interesting for some to find out that the following foods are in fact from Africa; Africa indeed has an astonishing lot to offer in diverse areas.

Below are some eating stuffs like foods, which you probably didn’t know its originated from Africa.

(1)Coffee
The dark, delicious and stimulating coffee bean is believed by many coffee experts to have originated from East Africa, where it was first grown sometime in the 14th century. It then made its way to Northern Africa in the 1600s before spreading to other parts of the world.

(2). Curry
This is one of the most widespread spices in the world and though it is largely identified with the Asians, its origin can be traced to Africa from the time of early railway construction to Uganda, when the British imported a lot of Indians who came to Africa with curries.

(3). Rice
While rice is able to be grown quite well on foreign non-African soil, African slaves are the ones credited with teaching foreigners (Americans to be precise) how to properly irrigate a rice field and thus grow rice.

(4). Sugar
Sugar actually came from New Guinea before making its way to foreign lands like America via the Middle East more than 12,000 years ago. It is believed that in the attempt of the Arabs to conquer Southern Africa, they spread sugar throughout the region, which eventually made its way to Spain and became popular in Europe and the rest of the western world.

Crisis Arises In Benue State, Killing 7 Including Major General

8 peoples, including a Major General, Lawrence Ugbo, have been reportedly killed and several others injured in Ugboju community, Otukpo LGA of Benue State.

The unfortunate crisis which broke out on Wednesday has rendered many persons homeless.

A resident, Peter Ogaba told The Nation that fighting broke out in the community after some boys from Ugboju allegedly attacked a group of persons loyal to a former Chairman of Otukpo.

It was gathered that the former council boss was in the village with his loyalists when another group believed to be his rival launched an attack on them, injuring many persons.

In a reprisal attack, the politician went back and teamed up with his boys who reportedly stormed the community, killing anybody on sight.

Ekiti State Students Wins The First Position In The 2017/2018 SSCE NECO Examination

Ekiti state says today that it has retained its first position in the recently conducted National Examination Council (NECO) test for secondary school students.

Of all the states in the country, Ekiti recorded the best results in the 2016 Senior Secondary School Examination (SSCE) of NECO.

Governor Ayo Fayose, in a statement by Idowu Adelusi, his chief press secretary, said: “Our efforts in the education sector are yielding positive results, we have retained our first and leading position in this year’s NECO examinations. Last year we came first and we have done it again.

“I am promising the people of the state that we are going to maintain that leading position throughout my tenure and it will continue by the grace of God when my deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka takes over from me.

“Apart from being diligent, he is the one supervising the education sector and I am proud of his commitment to duty and I am assuring you that with him in the saddle, things would get better.

“When I first came to office in 2003, the sector was in bad shape and we organised the first Education Summit and we moved from number 34 in the federation to seven and first in the Sourh-West. I came back again to meet it in a bad state and we took some steps and here we are.

“Last year when we came first, some critics who would not see anything good in other people said we reaped from what our predecessor left. Now we have proved them wrong.

“We are the first when it comes to the motivation of teachers and assisting them with teaching aids and materials. No state celebrates teachers like we do during the annual Teachers’ Day.”

Congratulations to them..
