Ondo Monarchs Seek FG’s Intervention in Oil-rich Eba Island Dispute

Traditional rulers and stakeholders from various communities in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State have rejected claims by neighboring Ogun State over the rightful ownership of Eba Island, located along the boundary of the two western states.

Both Ondo and Ogun States have recently been in a dispute over the oil-rich island, with each state claiming ownership.

The Ogun State Government has reaffirmed its territorial jurisdiction over the island in the Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, dismissing Ondo State’s claims as misleading and capable of triggering avoidable communal tension.

However, the Ondo Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kayode Ajulo, described the dispute as “astonishing,” noting that official records and decades of administration have long recognised the island as part of Ondo State territory.

In response, the Ilaje monarchs, under the auspices of the Ilaje Local Government Traditional Chieftaincy Committee, issued a statement on Thursday appealing to the Federal Government to intervene and prevent a potential communal crisis.

The statement was jointly signed by their chairman and secretary, Oba Williams Akinyomi, Amapetu of Mahinland, and Oba Femi Ogbaro, Odoka of Ogbara Kingdom.

According to the monarchs, claims by traditional rulers from Ogun Waterside and the Ijebu axis are historically inaccurate and contradict established administrative and geographical records. They insisted that Eba Island belongs to the Sunshine State.

“Eba Island, alongside Atijere and several surrounding settlements, has historically formed part of Ilaje land and remains under the jurisdiction of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State,” the statement partly read.

The monarchs explained that historical records clearly mark the pre-colonial boundary between the Mahin Kingdom in Ilaje and the Ijebu (Ogun State) axis at the meeting point of the red and white sand at the Efire/Ofara River, a natural landmark that still exists.

They added, “Regarding the land dispute between Ogun and Ondo State, the way forward is to make the Federal and state governments aware that Eba Island is in Ilaje land in Atijere, Ilaje Local Government, Ondo State. We want a committee to be set up to prevent a crisis.

“We respect the Federal Government and the President of Nigeria for what is being done and trust that equity and justice will prevail. Our message to the Ogun Government is that they should remain where they are; we will not allow them to claim illegitimate lands. If the issue is unresolved, we are ready to pursue legal avenues. At the end of the day, if there is no compromise, the legal route will be followed.”

The monarchs also cited electoral evidence, noting that Lugboroko Polling Unit 24 and Basa Polling Unit 21, both located within the Eba Island Forest Reserve, fall under Mahin Ward IV in Ilaje Local Government Area.

They argued that the operation of these polling units within the Nigerian electoral framework further confirms Ilaje’s long-established administrative control.

Recalling history, the monarchs said that when the Mahin District was incorporated into the Lagos Colony in 1895, Atijere and the surrounding communities were part of the district. The creation of the Atijere Native Court in 1937 placed Eba Island and nearby settlements under its jurisdiction, reinforcing traditional and administrative ties to Ilaje territory.

They added that when Atijere became the headquarters of the Ilaje District Council in 1955, Eba Island and its environs were placed directly under its authority, a status that has remained unchanged through subsequent administrative structures, including the creation of Ilaje Local Government.

In his remarks, the Monarch of Atijere Kingdom, Oba Samuel Adeoye, called on the Federal Government and the concerned state governments to convene a roundtable discussion.

“There might be a need for both states to come to a roundtable discussion and be frank with each other. If they are not sincere or try to access resources that do not belong to them, the problem may persist.

“There should be a meeting point where both communities and state governments will sit down, look at all issues, and resolve them amicably. I believe God will give us the wisdom to do so,” he said.

While expressing support for the exploration and development of oil in the Eba area, the Ilaje traditional rulers declared that they would resist any attempt to annex Ilaje land.

They also called for an on-site investigation involving representatives of the affected communities and both states.

The attacks targeted troops stationed in Goniri, under Sector 2 of the operation, from the night of Monday, March 9, through the early hours of Tuesday, March 10, 2026.

The military disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Lt. Col. Sani Uba.

According to the statement, the terrorists attempted to launch coordinated assaults from multiple directions in a bid to encircle the troops’ positions.

“Troops of the Joint Task Force (North-East), deployed in Goniri under Sector 2 of Operation HADIN KAI, have successfully foiled coordinated attacks launched by ISWAP terrorists on their location in Goniri, Yobe State, killing over 20 terrorists,” Uba said.

“The attacks occurred from the night of Monday, March 9, 2026, through the early hours of Tuesday, March 10, 2026, when the troops came under heavy assault from multiple directions.”

He explained that the terrorists were initially detected through surveillance assets as they advanced simultaneously from Goniri village and the Ngamdu Junction axis.

“The terrorists were initially detected through surveillance assets advancing simultaneously from Goniri village and the Ngamdu Junction axis in an apparent attempt to encircle the military location,” he added.

Uba noted that the troops responded swiftly with superior firepower and coordinated defensive manoeuvres. Reinforcements were mobilised, while the air component of the operation provided close air support, significantly degrading the terrorists’ fighting capability.

“During the intense firefight, the terrorists were overwhelmed and forced to retreat in disarray, suffering heavy casualties. Over 20 terrorists were neutralised, including a senior terrorist commander identified as Abu Yusu, the Munzir of Dursula,” the statement said.

The military spokesman said troops recovered several weapons and equipment abandoned by the fleeing insurgents, including multiple machine guns, AK-47 rifles, improvised explosive devices, bombs, and assorted ammunition.

Uba further disclosed that follow-up clearance operations were conducted in Gwaigomari within the Timbuktu Triangle, where additional bodies of terrorists were discovered during patrols carried out up to the early hours of Wednesday, March 11.

He also stated that soldiers injured during the encounter had been evacuated for medical treatment and were in stable condition.

“The location remains firmly under the control of Operation HADIN KAI troops,” he said.

He added that ground forces, supported by the air component, were conducting aggressive follow-up operations in the surrounding areas, including search and clearance operations in nearby communities where wounded terrorists were suspected to have fled.

Uba reiterated that Operation HADIN KAI remains committed to defeating insurgency and restoring lasting peace in the North-East.

Butt Enlargement Saga: Lagos Probes Elena’s Death After Cosmetic BBL Surgery

The Lagos State Government has commenced an investigation into the reported death of a Lagos socialite popularly known as “Elena”, who allegedly died after undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift cosmetic procedure, popularly known as BBL, at an unnamed clinic in the state.

According to reports, a buttock enlargement procedure is a cosmetic surgery that involves removing fat from other parts of the body and injecting it into the buttocks to achieve a rounder and fuller shape.

The probe is being conducted through the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, the regulatory body responsible for monitoring and accrediting health facilities in Lagos.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Permanent Secretary, Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, Abiola Idowu, the government said the investigation followed reports circulating on social media alleging that the woman developed complications after the aesthetic procedure.

The statement noted that the complications were reported to have occurred during or shortly after the surgery.

“The Lagos State Government, through the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), has commenced a full investigation into the reported death of a Lagos socialite popularly known as ‘Elena,’ who allegedly died after undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) cosmetic procedure at a clinic in the state.

“The development follows reports circulating on social media alleging that the young woman developed complications after the aesthetic procedure, which reportedly occurred either during or shortly after the surgery.

“While details of the incident are still being verified, the State Government has assured the public that a thorough, professional, and transparent investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate event”, the statement partly read.

The agency disclosed that preliminary findings indicated the clinic where the procedure reportedly took place is registered with the regulatory agency, but stressed that registration does not shield any facility from investigation when patient safety concerns arise.

The statement continued, “Preliminary information indicates that the clinic where the procedure reportedly took place is registered with HEFAMAA.

“However, the agency notes that registration does not preclude any facility from regulatory scrutiny, particularly when incidents involving patient safety are reported.

“As the statutory regulatory body responsible for monitoring, licensing, and accrediting healthcare facilities in Lagos State, HEFAMAA ensures that all health facilities comply with established operational standards, professional guidelines, and patient safety protocols.”

According to the statement, aesthetic and cosmetic surgical procedures in Lagos are governed by clearly defined regulatory standards covering facility requirements, practitioner qualifications and patient safety measures.

“The agency reiterates that aesthetic and cosmetic surgical procedures are governed by clearly defined regulatory standards in Lagos State.

“These standards include requirements relating to facility infrastructure, practitioner qualifications, infection prevention and control protocols, patient consent procedures, unaesthetic safety, and emergency response capacity”, the agency added.

It added that the agency had begun a comprehensive review of the incident to determine whether the clinic and medical personnel complied with existing regulations.

“Consequently, HEFAMAA has commenced a comprehensive review of the incident, including an assessment of compliance with regulatory standards, verification of the professional credentials of the medical personnel involved, and evaluation of the level of care provided to the patient before, during, and after the procedure”, the statement further stated.

The agency urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information that could undermine the investigation.

It also advised residents seeking cosmetic procedures to ensure they patronise only accredited health facilities and qualified medical practitioners.

“Members of the public are therefore urged to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified or speculative information that may compromise the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

“The Lagos State Government also advises residents seeking cosmetic or aesthetic procedures to exercise due diligence by ensuring that such services are obtained only from accredited health facilities and qualified medical practitioners with the requisite training and competence.”

The agency reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the health and safety of residents through stricter regulatory oversight and enforcement of healthcare standards.

“The government remains firmly committed to protecting the health and safety of all residents through strengthened regulatory oversight, continuous monitoring of healthcare facilities, and strict enforcement of healthcare standards across the state.

“Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses”, the agency concluded.

According to reports, in August 2024, a 36-year-old woman identified only as Abiola died while undergoing a buttocks enlargement procedure at a clinic in the Lekki-Phase 1 area of Lagos State. https://punchng.com/lady-dies-during-buttock-enlargement-surgery-in-lagos/

United Kingdom Denies Tinubu’s State Visit, Says "Road Closures, no-fly zones"

Britain will impose airspace restrictions and deploy armed police officers in Windsor next week as President Bola Tinubu arrives for a state visit hosted by King Charles III.

Tinubu is expected to begin the visit in the company of his wife Oluremi Tinubu on Wednesday, March 18, with a reception at Windsor Castle.

Thames Valley Police in a statement on its website on Wednesday, said it is working with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the Royal Household and other security partners.

The force said airspace restrictions over Windsor Castle, which are in place permanently throughout the year, would be extended on Wednesday, March 18, to cover the period from 7am to 11.59pm.

Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall of Thames Valley Police’s Joint Operations Unit said the air restrictions formed part of a broader security operation for the visit.

“The air restrictions are just one part of our robust security operation for the state visit of Nigerian President Tinubu next week, with many measures you will see and others you will not..

“As a force, we have a vast amount of experience in policing Royal events in Windsor and significant planning, and preparation has gone into this event,” Hall said.

He said the force would take a strong stance in enforcing the restrictions, warning that any breach would constitute a criminal offence under the Air Navigation Order and could lead to arrest.

“We will be taking a strong stance in enforcing the restrictions; anyone who breaches them will be committing a criminal offence under the Air Navigation Order and could be arrested.”

The police chief said officers with specialist capabilities, including search teams, the Mounted Section, road policing, and armed units, would be deployed across Windsor, alongside neighbourhood policing and Project Servator resources.

“We will also be deploying numerous police officers to Windsor with specialist capabilities, including our search teams, Mounted Section, Roads Policing and armed units, while our neighbourhood and Project Servator resources will also be on the ground engaging with the public,” he said.

The authorities will also deploy an extensive closed-circuit television network, hostile vehicle mitigation barriers, and other undisclosed security measures for the event.

Hall said, “We will also be using the extensive CCTV network in Windsor, Hostile Vehicle Mitigation barriers, and many other security measures that you may not be able to see to make sure the event runs safely.”

He urged members of the public to support the security operation by remaining vigilant.

“The public plays a critical role to support us so we encourage them to report any suspicious activity or anything that does not seem quite right by calling 101 or speaking to one of our officers. If there is an immediate threat or emergency, then call 999,” Hall added.

Road closures and parking restrictions will take effect from Tuesday, March 17, with possible temporary disruption to roads in and around Windsor during the visit.

Thames Valley Police said it was being supported by the Civil Aviation Authority and National Air Traffic Services to enforce the flight restrictions. Persons with legitimate reasons for drone flying were directed to email TVPAirspaceRequests@thamesvalley.police.uk.
