Econet Begins Construction Of $100m Data Centre In Lagos

The Founder, Econet Global and owner of Liquid Telecom, Strive Masiyiwa, says work has commenced on a new data centre facility in Lagos valued at $100m.

Masiyiwa said the data centre, which would be the largest facility outside South Africa, had been named Africa Data Centre, Atlantic and would be built on five acres of land.

While displaying the architectural design of the data centre made by Trevor Juul in a Facebook post, he said the facility would be powered by solar energy and natural gas.

As part of the investment in Nigeria, he said Liquid’s Undersea cables company would land a new high capacity cable into Nigeria next year in partnership with Google.

This, according to him, will make data costs much cheaper and faster.

He said, “This week marked the start of the construction of our first major data centre facility in Lagos, Nigeria. Named the ADC Atlantic, this is a US$100m investment in the Nigerian economy. In the Data Centre world, this will be the largest facility outside South Africa.

“This cable which is in partnership with Google will also extend all the way to Cape Town, South Africa. We are also going to start laying new fibres in major cities from next year,” he said.

He added, “This is our largest investment in Nigeria since the mobile industry started.

Once again, I am kicking off a new revolution in the next phase of technology. What is important is not the data centre but the technologies that will be unleashed in Nigeria because of this infrastructure. That’s the big deal here!”

Liquid Telecom had raised $307m through a rights issue to fund a rapid expansion of its data centre business across Africa.

The rights issue included an additional $40m from UK development finance institution, CDC Group Plc.

Masiyiwa first invested in Nigerian mobile telecom industry in 2001, after MTN, before selling its shares to Celtel and then Bharti Airtel.

President Buhari is Not in Charge, Kidnap of Schoolboys in His Home State is a Slap on His Face – Wole Soyinka Says

Soyinka and Buhari
Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka has reacted to the kidnap of schoolboys from a Government Secondary School in Kankara community of Katsina State; home state of President Buhari.

In a statement titled “INFRADIG–A presidential comeuppance”, the playwright stressed that President Buhari is not in charge as the “abduction once again of the nation’s children” in his terrain is “a slap across the face of the Commander-in-Chief”.

Recalling how President Buhari declined appearing before the National Assembly to answer questions of the rising insecurity in the country, Soyinka stated that such action is “frightening”.

He wrote;

“That, to come to the present, constituted Buhari’s response to the National Assembly’s invitation to drop in for a chat. He did not consider it infradig at the beginning. He responded to the polite invitation to rub minds urgently over a people’s security anxieties as one who still struggled to preserve the tattered remains of his ‘Born-Again’ democratic camouflage.

“However, his reversal of consent raised yet again the frightening situation report I have fervently posed: Buhari is not in charge. Whoever is, that segment of the cabalistic control obviously cornered him on the way to the lawmakers’ chambers and urged: Don’t! Their invitation is infradig! He succumbed.

“Beneath the dignity of a Commander-in-Chief! Well. The opportunistic homicidal respondents -Bandits/Boko Haram or whoever – thereupon picked up the gauntlet and provided a response in their own language: abduction once again of the nation’s children. They handed him a slap across the face, on his home terrain, taunting: See if that is more suited to your dignity.”.

Lekki Shooting: Segalink Condemns CNN, Says Their Report is ”Complicit”

Nigerians on Twitter are currently reacting to a thread by activist and member of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry, Segun Awosanyo, popularly known as Segalinks, stating that international media platform CNN is ‘complicit’ and has failed to defend its globally publicized investigation on the Lekki tollgate shooting.

Segalinks shared this thought while reacting to the lingering drama surrounding the BBC Sex for Grades documentary.

While reacting to the controversy surrounding the ownership of the documentary, Segalinks threw shade at some persons who have tried to” re-write history by attempting to sell the #EndSARS and #ReformPoliceNG as a Protest”. According to him, this set of persons want to ”own it and weaponize it against the state at the expense of the vulnerable in society and our democracy!”.

The activist went on to accuse CNN of being complicit in the agenda of the said people.

One thing is certain…you can’t intimidate the truth & neither can you wish it away. Lies pushed with the vilest of hate still can’t prevent the truth from appearing. The desperation of the socially maladjusted is obvious just for the lust for fame & fortune. #EndHypocrisy

These are the ones seeking to re-write history by attempting to sell the #EndSARS #ReformPoliceNG as a Protest. They want the world to believe it started months ago. They want to own it & weaponize it against the state at the expense of the vulnerable in society & our democracy!

The plot is thicker than you know and soon it will all be revealed. CNN is complicit in this as they have demonstrably failed to defend their globally publicized “investigation” even before an independent truth panel. You still think the chaos was based on care for your security?

The #EndSARS #ReformPoliceNG Advocacy as executed by @SIAF_NG

is policy driven. It has nothing to do with Regime change or mob rule. It is undeterred and running undisturbed. It is not also about dependency on any individual but about sanitizing the criminal justice system.”

Some Nigerians however felt it was improper for him as a member of the judicial panel to make such a comment about CNN and its refusal to appear before the panel of inquiry.
