Soldiers Killed 3 Officers and Released a Kidnap Suspect in Taraba - Nigeria Police Says

Police accuse soldiers of killing 3 officers and releasing a kidnap suspect in Taraba.

The Nigeria Police Force have accused soldiers of killing three of their personnel while freeing a kidnap suspect in Taraba state.

According to a statement released by Frank Mba, the spokesperson of the force, he said police officers from the Intelligence Response Team IRT, were in Taraba to effect the arrest of one Hamisu, an alhaji “indicted in a series of high-profile kidnap incidents in the state. Hamisu who is a “notorious” kidnap kingpin has been on the Police wanted list for his complicity in several high-profile kidnap cases including the recent abduction of an Oil-Mogul in Taraba State wherein a ransom of about One Hundred Million Naira (N100,000,000) was paid.

Mba says the police officers had arrested Hamisu but was set free by some soldiers who attacked the police officers.

''The soldiers thereafter released the handcuffed suspect, Alhaji Hamisu, who is now on the run. The Police Operatives, led by ASP Felix Adolije of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) reportedly came under sudden attack and serious shooting by soldiers of the Nigerian Army, along Ibi – Jalingo Road, Taraba State.

The Operatives, who were taking the arrested suspect, Alhaji Hamisu to the Command Headquarters in Jalingo, were shot at severally by the soldiers despite sufficient proof that they are Police personnel on legitimate duty.

Three Policemen (comprising one Inspector and two Sergeants) and one civilian died as a result of gunshot injuries sustained in the attack while others sustained serious gunshot wounds.” Mba said  

Mba said the police have commenced full investigation into the “bizarre and unfortunate incident.”

The Nigerian Army is yet to react to this allegation.

EFCC Nabbed Village District Head And Two Others Over Diverting of Government’s Fertilizer in Zamfara

Village district head, two others arrested for diverting government’s fertilizer in Zamfara State.

Operatives of the Sokoto Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC have arrested the Chairman of Rice Farmers’ Association of Nigeria, RIFAN, Gummi Local Government Chapter, Ibrahim Rijiya for alleged involvement in the diversion of three trailer loads of 1,800 bags of fertilizer, and a truck-load of farming herbicide belonging to rice farmers in Gummi.

Also arrested were the Council Storekeeper, Aminu Musa and Abdullahi Bashir. Rijiya, who is also the District Head of Rijiya Gummi, Gummi LGA, Zamfara State, is also alleged to have diverted three trailers loaded with fertilizer and other supplies for their local farmers, and later sold each bag at the sum of N3,000 including other farm materials..

The EFCC had received a petition from representatives of seven different groups of rice farmers, alleging that sometimes in July 2018, the Federal Government approved and disbursed 12 trucks of fertilizer and herbicides, on loan to 83 cooperative groups in Gummi and that no member of the association fully collected all the items as approved by the government.

All efforts made by the Gummi Chapter of RIFAN to get the items back, proved abortive.  Investigation revealed that Rijiya conspired with Musa to divert and sell the three trailers of fertilizer and a truck load of herbicide to Bashir at the cost of N17.1 million and shared the money among themselves.

The suspects confessed to their roles in the crime, while the three trailers of the fertilizer have been recovered from them. Efforts are in top-gear to recover the diverted herbicide. They will soon be arraigned in court.
