Oyo APC Will Regain Power in 2023 – Fatai Ibikunle Says

A prominent leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Oyo state, and Chairman, National Lottery Commission, Alhaji Fatai Ibikunle has expressed bewilderment over the statement credited to the former National Chairman of APC, Chief John Oyegun challenging the fitness and competence of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to lead the ruling party.

The statement by Chief Oyegun which has raised lots of concern among APC faithfuls across the country was greeted with mix reactions, leading to the vote of confidence passed by states’ APC chairmen on Oshiomhole last week. But, the Oyo state APC stalwart, Alhaji Ibikunle, a former Personal Assistant to the late former governor Lam Adesina described the statement by the former APC Chairman, Oyegun as very unfortunate , particularly coming from someone, who has caused incalculable damage to the party.

The Chairman, National Lottery Commission while calling on the party men and women to rally support for the leadership of Oshiomhole to rebuild and take the party to enviable position, expressed the optimism that APC would regain power in Oyo state in 2023.

He narrated how Chief Oyegun caused the loss of the party in Oyo, saying that due to his poor leadership the party witnessed more defeats in the states, and turned the governors to monsters.

“The elderly man, Oyegun lacks the moral right to challenge Oshiomhole because he has caused the defeat and misfortunes of the party in many states . The party was grounded before Oshiomhole came, in many states the APC was already destabilized and in a bad shape.

Take for instance, Oyo state. We held a congress that was witnessed and observed by all including the National officers but Oyegun changed everything because the governor visited him with some gifts and over the night he made himself unavailable for us to talk to . How can an elderly man like that, doing injustice and still have the moral right to be challenging another person. He lacks moral right to say someone is not fit to lead the party.

The man  loves gifts. An elderly man of his stature must look for the progress of the party first before and above personal gratification. He must take decision based on truth and justice. This governor does not obtain ward congress form for his own ward executive and that is the foundation of the party.  But we obtained form before the expiration date but the governor did not till date. But Oyegun decided to maneuver everything to the advantage of the ones who greased his hands.
And the same thing he must have done in other states. And he is the same person that is now challenging Oshiomhole that he is not capable to be the chairman of the party. Let me tell you that Oshiomhole is more capable to lead the party than him because Oshiomhole will always call a spade, a spade.
But Oyegun is skillful in using diplomacy to say okay be assured justice will be done, everything will be looked into but overnight after something must have changed hands he will change white to black, how can an elderly person do like that . Am taking Oyo state as an example because I am an active participant, I am affected . And that is the beginning of the failure of our party in Oyo state. He caused it because he worshipped governors and he believed they are the people that determines his life and he was once a governor.
He turned the governors to be emperors and monsters . What we know is that party is different from government but Oyegun merged everything. So, Oyegun has no moral right to challenge anybody , not even challenge the capability of Oshiomhole. He should just go and sleep and retire,” he stated.

Traditional Ruler Urges FG to Use Veto Power to Achieve Local Government Autonomy

King Edmond Dakuru, the Paramount ruler of Nembe Kingdom in Bayelsa, has urged the Federal Government to tackle the lingering issue of local government autonomy by using its veto power.

Dakuru told Newsmen on Monday in Port Harcourt that the measure had become necessary to assist the Federal Government impact efficiently on the local populace.

He urged the Federal Government to exercise its supreme power to achieve financial independence which is key to true democracy for the third tier of government.

The monarch said that local governments over the years had failed in terms of attracting real development to the local populace and so, should be granted autonomy to enable it take full control of its revenue and needs of the local people.

“I don’t believe that legislation is the only way through which governors can effectively supervise local government council chairmen.

way through which governors can effectively supervise local government council chairmen. Banditry : Buratai visits trouble zones, interact with troops in Katsina, Zamfara(Opens in a new browser tab) “ I’m of the opinion that governors should first set good examples, they should remove the logs in their eyes so that they can see clearly the mote in the eyes of their local government chairmen.

“The governors always have the leverage to influence the local government by adopting good leadership and accountability at the state level, after all they are a senior tier,” he said. Dakuru described as “worrisome’’, the insistence by state governors to continue running a joint account with the local government, a strategy which according to him, has been proven to be a hindrance to growth in the third tier of government.

“For the governors to insist that local government allocations passed through the joint account, l think it’s suspicious because this same strategy has been tried over the years and it has not yielded positive result.

“At this point, I think the Federal Government has the right to try other mechanism by proportionately directing local government revenue straight to the local government account. “We deliberated on local government autonomy during the 2014 Confab and addressing its implementation by this administration will be a step in the right direction.

“If the state governments actually meant well for the local people, they will not kick against local government autonomy as they have no right to deny the Federal Government an opportunity to try other methods aimed at delivering good governance at the grassroots.

“Since the council chairmen live among the local people, it gives the people a higher opportunity of having direct supervision and monitoring in terms of project planning and programmes implementation,”

he said. The traditional ruler also suggested the involvement of technocrats in local government administration, adding that local government council chairmen should be knowledgeable in planning and budgeting to properly address the plight of the rural communities.

APC National Working Committee adopts Omo-Agege, Wase for Dept. Senate President, Dep. Speaker

The National Working Committee, NWC, of the ruling all Progressives Congress, APC, has adopted the candidature of Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege and Hon. Muhammed Idris Wase for the positions of Deputy Senate President and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively.

The development came as lawyers under the aegis of Coalition of Public Interest Lawyers and Advocates, CUPA, as well as the Middle Belt Alliance for Peace, Development and United Nigeria, cautioned members of the House against electing a speaker or principal officers who may have questions to answer regarding their stewardship in other places.

The South-South zonal chapter of the APC had, at the weekend, also endorsed Omo-Agege, a move that effectively knocked out other contenders like Senators Francis Alimikhena and Orji Uzor Kalu.

National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, in a statement on Monday morning in Abuja, said the NWC took the decision after it held emergency meetings between Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th June 2019.

“The party formally adopts Senator Ovie Omo-Agege for the positions of Deputy Senate President and Hon. Muhammed Idris Wase as Deputy Speaker. This is sequel to wide consultations with President Muhammadu Buhari, party stakeholders, including APC governors”, he said. The party had earlier announced the duo of Sen. Ahmed Lawan and Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila as the party’s candidates for the positions of Senate President and Speaker of House Representatives respectively.

“All elected APC members of the Senate and House of Representatives are hereby directed to fully mobilise as a united force behind the party’s choice” the APC ordered.

It also urged members who have earlier signified interests in the same positions “to support the party’s decisions as loyal and committed members of APC by working with other members to ensure the emergence of the adopted candidates”.
