Photos: Meet The New World Richest Man

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has overtaken Bill Gates and is now the richest person in the world, with a fortune topping $90 billion for the first time ever.

When markets opened on Thursday, Bezos had a net worth of $90.6b, putting him $500m ahead of Microsoft founder Bill Gates. Amazon stock opened up 1.6% on Thursday, adding $1.4b to Bezos’ net worth. That was enough to put him ahead of Gates, who was last surpassed on Forbes’ real-time rankings for just two days nearly a year ago by Spanish retail giant Amancio Ortega.

Forbes started tracking billionaires around the globe in 1987. Bezos is now the seventh person to hold the title of the world’s richest person and the third American to top the global ranks besides Gates and Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett.

While Gates and Buffett both appeared on Forbes’ first ranking of America’s 400 Richest people in 1982, Bezos is a newer addition to Forbes’ wealth rankings. He first appeared on the Forbes 400 in 1998, a year after Amazon went public, with a $1.6 billion fortune. Bezos ranked third richest in the world on Forbes 2017 list of the World's Billionaires, published in March, with a fortune of $72.8 billion.

Bezos would be nowhere close to being the world’s wealthiest person had Gates not given so much of his fortune to philanthropy. Gates, who created the Giving Pledge with Buffett to encourage billionaires to give at least half of their wealth to charitable causes, had given away $32.9 billion over the course of his lifetime through end of 2016. Forbes estimates that Bezos, who has not signed the pledge, had given approximately $100 million to charity through the end of 2015. In June, Bezos tweeted out a request for ideas for his philanthropy, garnering thousands of responses.

Bezos attended Princeton and then worked at a hedge fund before starting his online bookseller in a garage in Seattle in 1994. Amazon has since grown into an online retail behemoth selling a wide range of products. It also offers cloud services through its Amazon Web Services division, known as AWS. Outside of his day job, Jeff Bezos owns aerospace company Blue Origin and the Washington Post.

Gates fortune is built on software firm Microsoft, which he founded in 1975 with his friend Paul Allen. Gates has sold off much of his Microsoft stake but still owns about 2% of the company's shares, worth about $12.4 billion -- just under 14% of his fortune. His investment firm Cascade Investments has ploughed Gates' money into a wide variety of assets, including public stocks, real estate, private equity and venture capital. Gates owns stakes in companies as diverse as Canadian National Railway, hygiene technologies firm Ecolab and Mexican Coke bottler Femsa.

Court Sentenced Grandma To Jail For Dumping Daughter’s Day-Old Baby In Bush

A 36-year old Nigerian Grandmother, Mrs. Bosede Oyetunde, has been sentenced to one month’s imprisonment by a family court sitting in Oke Eda, Akure, Ondo State, for dumping a day-old baby boy, her grandson, in the bush.

The incident happened in Omotoso town in the Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the woman committed the offence on July 13, 2017.

The accused and her daughter, who is the mother of the baby, Opeyemi Isaac, were arrested by the men of the Igbotako Police Division.

The duo, who were arraigned on two counts of felony and attempted murder, were said to have put the baby in a nylon bag before throwing him into the bush.

According to the charge sheet, the offences committed contravened “sections 516, and 320(2) of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol1, Law of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.”
The accused pleaded guilty to the charges against them.

In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Edwin, sentenced the grandmother to one month’s imprisonment. She also ordered the convict to be reporting at Igbotako Police Station to render two months’ community service, after the completion of her jail term.

The magistrate ordered the mother of the baby to breastfeed the baby in the Ondo State Children Home, under the supervision of the police, for a month.

Opeyemi, after the court session, claimed that her mother told her that the child had died.

Common Mistakes People Make About Money

We’re all guilty of it at one point or the other, but if we want to have more control over our finances and make money work better for us, it is best to learn to avoid these common money mistakes that can have such detrimental effects on our finances.

Below are some common mistakes people make about money.

1). Spending Money You Don’t Have Yet
You might be tempted to splurge on one or two things and tell yourself you’ll replenish the money with your next income, however when the income comes, you quickly realize other pressing commitments come up which you have to take care of. Ultimately, you end up overspending and being broke till the next paycheck comes. This will then put you in a tight and very uncomfortable financial position in the meantime and you might even end up borrowing to make ends meet; this is likely to launch you into a vicious cycle of debt (unless you’re able to discipline yourself enough to make the necessary sacrifices to get out of it).

2). Forgetting That Small Purchases Lead Up to Big Expenses
Spending N500 here for a biscuit, then another N500 there for an exotic drink, might not seem like such a big deal at first especially when chilling on vacation. If you continue spending that way for a week, you would have spent N2500 more than you budgeted for and, though little, it can easily become a significant amount of money if you continue spending that way for a month. Little purchases add up, and rather than spending money frivolously, you can be using it to take care of important expenses like groceries. Pay attention to your ‘little’ expenses, if not you’ll be surprised at just how big they can become.

3). Not Keeping an Emergency Fund
Never make this mistake because when these inevitable times come, they can leave you completely destabilized if you’re not adequately prepared for them. It is best to have some money saved in an emergency fund or bank account, which you can earn interest on, till an emergency occurs. On the bright side, if an emergency never occurs, you would have accumulated a significant amount of money that you can enjoy or re-invest wisely to make more money.

4). Spending More Than You Earn
You either spend less than you earn or earn more than you spend- this is the simple principle. Your spending should never be equal to your earning (because you need to keep some money aside for emergencies) or exceed your earning (because this can lead to debt and avoidable ‘gbese’). Living from paycheck to paycheck (that is, spending as much as you earn) or accumulating debt because you spend more than you earn, are very inconvenient ways to live. The importance of being disciplined with your spending cannot be overemphasized and you should make the necessary sacrifices or lifestyle changes to make your spending align better with what you earn.

5.) Not Having an Allowance for Entertainment Spending
There really isn’t much more that can be said on this topic than for you to ensure you have a budget for your entertainment expenses, which you must be disciplined enough to strictly adhere to. One thing that can help in creating an efficient budget for your entertainment expenses, is to understand your entertainment needs and set up a budget based on that understanding. Discipline then comes in, to help you determine the things you can in fact do without and the things you have to do without because you can’t afford them. You can then comfortably settle at a middle point, setting aside an average range for your entertainment expenses that you’re more likely to adhere to.

"Real Madrid Contract Termination Is My Decision" - Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho claims he had to beg Real Madrid to let him go.

He, however, said he does not expect to suffer a similar ending to his time at Manchester United.

Mourinho ended his three-year stay at the Santiago Bernabeu in May 2013 by mutual consent, despite having three years left on his contract.

He then returned to Chelsea for a second spell a month later before moving to United for the start of the 2016/2017 season.

Asked what he considered the hardest part of rebuilding United following the underwhelming reign of Louis van Gaal, he told reporters: “The hardest part in my opinion was the period where there was an evolution in football overall, in terms of every other team, not just the typical powerful teams, but all the others. Their evolution in relation to the changes in football allowed them also to be economically strong.

“At the same time there was an evolution and Man United did not follow that evolution and my work is not just about arriving at a football team and developing the football team to attack, football targets and objectives, it was more than that.

“It was to go into the structure and to try to adapt the structure around the football team to a new dynamic. And that was the same at Real Madrid, a big club with big expectations but a difficult period with the evolution of other teams and the distance between Real Madrid and Barcelona growing bigger and bigger and bigger.

“When I arrived it was not just about developing a football team to try to stop that domination, but to also develop everything around the team and in that respect I can see similarities in terms of the difficulties and similarities in terms of the dimension of my job.

“I think what we did last season, Europa League, League Cup, sixth in the Premier League is what gets into your eyes. But I know that my job was much more than just the success in some competitions and being unsuccessful in the Premier League.

“To be honest, with the club [Real]’s structure, they wanted me to stay, they didn’t want me to leave. Everybody in the club, president, CEO, the board, myself, we all felt after the years I was there that the difficult part of the job was done and they wanted me to stay.

“In fact, I almost had to beg to let them let me go. I don’t think that at United is going to happen, because I don’t want to go.

“Real Madrid, for me, was really something that I wanted to do. It was something I had a chance to do twice before and didn’t. And on the third time, I don’t think you can say ‘no’ three times to such a club. I wanted to go and win the title in Spain, but it was not for me to stay. I was not in love with my life there. I wanted to come back to England and in that case, to Chelsea.”

See Photo of French Mayor as He Eats RAT After Losing Bet On FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona 's surprising Champions League bounce back over Paris Saint-Germain last season forced a French mayor to eat a RAT after a bet backfired.

With PSG hammering Barca 4-0 in the first leg of their last-16 encounter, Charles Dayot of Mont-de-Marsan — a commune in southwestern France — took to Facebook to announce he would gobble down the unappetising dish if the Ligue 1 giants were dumped out.

But Dayot was left with no choice other than to swallow his pride along with a cooked rodent when Barcelona completed the unlikeliest of victories.

Although the Spanish giants led the second leg 2-0 at half-time, the bullish mayor was far from ratty as PSG appeared likely to score at least once at the Nou Camp.

A 50th-minute Lionel Messi penalty left him biting his fingernails but Edison Cavani netted just after the hour mark to leave the Spanish giants facing an uphill battle once again to turn the tie in their favour.

However, Messi and Co refused to throw in the towel and two late goals from Neymar — one a penalty — were followed by a last-gasp strike from Sergi Roberto.

With Barca winning 6-1 on the night and 6-5 on aggregate, Dayot was left facing the horrifying fact that he would have to munch on vermin.

And although it took him a while to stay true to his promise considering the tie was decided in March, he donned a PSG shirt as a napkin to tuck into is rat dish on Sunday.

He even went as far as to suggest the unusual cuisine actually tasted like rabbit — proving there really is no accounting for taste.

"All Thanks To God, The President Is Recovering" - Ebonyi State Gov, Dave Umahi

The Governor of Ebonyi State, Mr. Dave Umahi, has described the rate of the recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari as a miracle.

Umahi, who is one of the seven governors that visited the President in London yesterday night said that he and his colleagues were surprised with the level of his (President) recovery.

Apart from Umahi, others governors in the entourage are Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom); Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara); Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo); Samuel Ortom (Benue); Umar Ganduje (Kano); and Kashim Shettima (Borno).

Six of the governors were chosen based on the six geo-political zones in the country while the governor of Zamfara State was picked because of his position as the chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum.

Umahi, who was one of the two governors from the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, said that it was difficult for members of the opposition to believe what they were being told by the handlers of the President that he was getting better.

He, however, said that he was happy, just like the other six governors, that the President was making progress and that he had improved very well.

The governor said the President would soon return to the country as soon as his doctors certified him alright.

He said, “We met a cheerful President whose level of recovery is a miracle. We know he will soon return home as soon as his doctors certify him to do so. What he’s treating is not mere malaria that we can say he will return today or tomorrow.

“However, we are happy and we thank God for what we saw. It is contrary to the pictures people are painting on the social media. The President we saw is recuperating well and we are happy for that.

“It is even better that, we as members of the opposition party, are among the entourage. Nigerians should continue to pray for the President.“

Asked whether the President told them the likely date of his return, he said no, adding that there was no need to be too expectant, saying that the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), was doing a good job.

“We don’t need to panic because we have a hardworking acting President who is doing a fantastic job. All we need to do as Nigerians is to continue to pray for the President,” the governor added.

IPOB Leader, Nnamdi Kanu Says Court Can’t Stop Him

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, on Monday, granted an interview to some journalists in Enugu.

Kanu was in Enugu to receive awards from a number of pan-Igbo groups, including the Igbo Women Assembly, the Eastern Consultative Assembly and the Igbo Students Union.

Justice Binta Nyako had barred Kanu from granting interviews, and being in gatherings of more than 10 persons, when she granted the IPOB leader bail.

Asked if he was not worried that he could be re-arrested for flouting the bail conditions by granting the interview, Kanu said the court cannot stop him from speaking.

He said he was only responding to questions asked him by journalists.

According to him, refusing to respond to the questions would be seen as a sign of arrogance on his part.

He said, “I am replying you. That is what I am doing. I am not giving an interview, I am responding to the question you asked me.

“The judge is a very learned fellow. She cannot stop me from speaking.”

Kanu added that President Muhammadu Buhari and the Department of State Services were the ones that are guilty of flouting court orders.

“Buhari and the DSS have been in multiple breaches of court order after court order. I wish you can go to the DSS and ask Daura, what is his name? Lawal, whatever his name is, the DSS Director General, why DSS does not obey court orders.

“They are the ones flouting the court orders. It’s not me.

“What I am doing is entirely legal. You ask me a question and I respond to you because if I keep quiet you see me as a very arrogant fellow.”

Adesina said the President had earlier made a phone call to Conde, who is the current Chairman of  the Assemblies of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
