Presidency Replies Ex-Central Bank Governor, Charles Soludo, Says He is Entitled to His Opinion

The presidency has replied Former Central Bank Governor, Charles Soludo, who at a function in Enugu yesterday, said President Buhari has worsened the already bad economy he inherited in 2015.

In a statement issued by Special Assistant to acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, the presidency said Soludo is entitled to his opinion.

According to Akande, Nigerians are working with facts that have shown that the Buhari-led administration is taking Nigeria out of economic recession. Below is the statement..

"Prof Soludo is entitled to his own opinion, and Nigerians entitled to the facts. The opinion he expressed is understandable in a democratic system but the facts are that the challenges of today are a direct result of wrong headed decisions of the past, and quite mind-boggling actions of those who were entrusted with leadership. Some of those who served in the recent past have validated this assertion. Nigerians have demonstrated that they know the Buhari administration inherited a sorry state of the economy but is working diligently to fix it with positive results now emerging. What even Former CBN Governor Soludo cannot deny is the fact that the Buhari administration has ended the bleeding of the nation and is implementing reforms. The Buhari administration is spending more on infrastructure at a time when resources are lean. When we had abundant revenues what happened was profligacy and plunder. What no one can deny is that the Buhari administration is now implementing on behalf of ordinary Nigerians a Social Investment Programme that is unprecedented in Nigeria's history, paying poorest Nigerians N5000 monthly, feeding school children and engaging hundreds of thousands of unemployed graduates. And there is more to come. The Buhari administration is plugging loopholes in several ways including through the Treasury Single Account, raking in resources that otherwise were hidden and misappropriated and the proper auditing of the Federal payroll discovering about 30,000 ghost workers and saving billions per month. Another step in the right direction is the fact that Nigeria no longer has to shell out billions of dollars for JVC cash call, bringing relief from a burden that has slowed down investment in the oil industry. There has even been a marked improvement in PMS availability in the country. It is certainly quite curious that very few among us will choose to ignore the new direction but make store of the burdens of past without proper attributions. This appears to me to be selective amnesia to which they are certainly entitled. What would have been more patriotic is that people of goodwill will join several others working with us in this administration and offer progressive ideas and join hands with a government and administration that every one knows are led by a President and Vice President who are trustworthy and are people of unabashed honesty, and integrity.

Corporal Punishment For Children Been Ban In Zimbabwe

A High court in Zimbabwe has outlawed corporal punishment for children both at home and in school. Although a constitutional court will have to confirm the judgement, the ruling states that Parents and teachers are not allowed to lay their hands on children even if they misbehave.

The ruling comes after a parent, Linah Pfungwa, complained that her child in grade one had deep bruises after a teacher beat her. Linah said her daughter had been punished for failing to have her reading book signed by guardians as proof she had done her homework.

Ms Pfungwa, who filed her application with support from the Justice for Children's Trust, said her child was assaulted with a rubber pipe. In her application, she said that children should not be subjected to any form of violence and such corporal punishment breached their rights.

"My child suffered major bruises and I took photographs and pictures... She had deep bruises on her back and she could hardly sleep properly. I posted the pictures of my daughter on our WhatsApp group for other parents to observe and it turned out that other children had also been assaulted. If my child misbehaves, I ground her by denying her access to television as well as denying her pocket money or other goodies like sweets and presents," she said.

"If she does well, I reward her by presents or extra hours of watching television. My child is well-behaved and well-brought up simply as a result of the dialogue that I use as a means of discipline," Linah added.

Justice David Mangota agreed that corporal punishment for children was unconstitutional and parents and teachers should not lay their hands on children even if they misbehave. Some parents are criticising the ruling, while rights groups says it is long overdue.

Notorious Lagos State Deadly Gang Leader, Small-Jpron Has Escaped From Prison (See Photo)

Two operatives of the Lagos State Command are being detained for their alleged involvement in the release of a suspected serial killer, Ibrahim Balogun aka Small-Jpron.

The 36-year-old, who was notorious for cultism and killings in the Somolu and Bariga areas of Lagos, was said to have escaped from prison with the help of the policemen and other judicial officials at large.

Small-Jpron was earlier arrested in August 2016, and paraded at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja, where he confessed his involvement in the killings of three persons.

He had said, “I am an Eiye cult leader. I joined the cult in 2009. The reason for my joining was to avenge the death of a close friend, Sunday Folorunsho, aka Small Biscuit.

“It was the Aiye cult members who killed him. So, the Eiye faction approached me and said I should join them and they would help me fish out the people who killed my friend. I have killed three persons, among whom were Femi Wiper and Lekan Akon".

Small-Jpron was arraigned at an Ebute-Meta Magistrate’s Court. He disappeared from the public radar afterwards.

Good news is that he was re-arrested on Monday.

Although the suspect insisted that he was granted bail by the court, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, while parading him at the command headquarters on Wednesday, said he escaped from custody in connivance with the two police operatives.

The CP said the policemen, whose names were not disclosed, were under investigation, adding that other persons involved in the suspect’s release would be brought to book.

He said, “The suspect broke out of prison shortly after he was remanded. The circumstances surrounding his escape are being investigated. We are also investigating the complicity of two of our officials in ensuring his escape from the prison.

“We will not leave any stone unturned. Any judicial official found to be involved will also be brought to book".

In a chat with Punch, Small-Japron, who was said to be the leader of the Eiye Confraternity, stated that he was in the court for the continuation of his trial on the day he was re-arrested.

He explained that the police had brought him and his “second-in-command”, identified simply as Abbey, for arraignment in September 2016, when the latter disappeared.

The suspect claimed that he had denounced his membership of the cult, adding that his “former group” instigated his arrest.

He said, “When I was in prison, a brother in my area called Asuma told me not to worry that he would ensure my release. He is an omoonile (land grabber). He said he would see one justice over my case. I didn’t fight anybody again. I had gone to the court on Monday when policemen arrested me.

"Eiye cult members are fighting me because I told them I was no longer interested in the group. They set me up that day.

"The policemen asked me where Abbey was and I said I didn’t know. They told me that the prosecutor and the IPO (Investigating Police Officer) had been detained and that they wanted to know how he escaped on the first day we were brought to court. I have never jumped bail since I was arraigned in court".
Investigation is still going on.
