Lekki Shooting: Segalink Condemns CNN, Says Their Report is ”Complicit”

Nigerians on Twitter are currently reacting to a thread by activist and member of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry, Segun Awosanyo, popularly known as Segalinks, stating that international media platform CNN is ‘complicit’ and has failed to defend its globally publicized investigation on the Lekki tollgate shooting.

Segalinks shared this thought while reacting to the lingering drama surrounding the BBC Sex for Grades documentary.

While reacting to the controversy surrounding the ownership of the documentary, Segalinks threw shade at some persons who have tried to” re-write history by attempting to sell the #EndSARS and #ReformPoliceNG as a Protest”. According to him, this set of persons want to ”own it and weaponize it against the state at the expense of the vulnerable in society and our democracy!”.

The activist went on to accuse CNN of being complicit in the agenda of the said people.

”One thing is certain…you can’t intimidate the truth & neither can you wish it away. Lies pushed with the vilest of hate still can’t prevent the truth from appearing. The desperation of the socially maladjusted is obvious just for the lust for fame & fortune. #EndHypocrisy

These are the ones seeking to re-write history by attempting to sell the #EndSARS #ReformPoliceNG as a Protest. They want the world to believe it started months ago. They want to own it & weaponize it against the state at the expense of the vulnerable in society & our democracy!

The plot is thicker than you know and soon it will all be revealed. CNN is complicit in this as they have demonstrably failed to defend their globally publicized “investigation” even before an independent truth panel. You still think the chaos was based on care for your security?

Some Nigerians however felt it was improper for him as a member of the judicial panel to make such a comment about CNN and its refusal to appear before the panel of inquiry.

Omah Lay, Tems and Muyiwa Awomiyi Charged After Their Case File Was Sanctioned By The Office of The DPP

Plans of Omah Lay, Tems and Muyiwa Awomiyi being released on Ugandan police bond, has been suspended after their case file was sanctioned by the Office of the DPP.

An update shared on their official handle of the Ugandan Police Force revealed that were arraigned on charges of “negligently doing acts likely to spread an infectious diseases C/S 171 of the Penal Code Act.”

They were jointly charged with four other Ugandans and remanded till Wednesday, December 16.

The statement read;

The Nigerian trio of Stanley Omah Didia alias Omah Lay, Temilade Openyi alias Tems and Muyiwa Awomiyi have been charged to court in Makindye on charges of Negligently doing acts likely to spread an infectious diseases C/S 171 of the Penal Code Act.

The earlier plans of releasing them on police bond, were suspended after their casefile was sanctioned by the Office of the DPP. They were jointly charged with four other Ugandans. All remanded till Wednesday 16.12.2020.

Kankara Students Abduction: Northern Group Threatens to Take Protest to Daura

As anger continues to trail the abduction of over 300 students in Katsina state, the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has threatened to stage a protest to Daura, the hometown of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, the spokesperson of the coalition, made this known on Monday, December 14, amid a vortex of reactions over the recent blow on the security of the country.

It had been reported that on Friday, December 11, dozens of students were kidnapped by men suspected to be bandits from Government Science Secondary School in Kankara local government area of Katsina state.

Women and children on Sunday, December 13, have since taken to the streets of Kankara to express utter displeasure over the incident.

Speaking on the renewed onslaught by the bandits, Suleiman said there will be a protest march to Daura while the coalition’s Kano state chapter would also embark on a long trek from Dambatta, The Punch reports.

 

It said:

“Our state chapters are also embarking on a long trek to Daura in Katsina State to demand immediate action from Buhari who is currently in Daura.
“The Kano CNG will take off from Dambatta in solidarity with the Katsina chapter to link up with the Jigawa contingent at Kazaure from where they will join the Kano team at Mashi and proceed on the great trek to Daura for the long wait in front of Buhari’s country home.”

Google Applications Including YouTube, Gmail and Docs Suffer Rare Outage, With Users Unable to Access Services

The Google-owned family of apps has crashed for thousands of users worldwide.

This includes Gmail, Google Drive, Google Sheets and YouTube as well as the main search engine.

Outage tracker site DownDetecter clocked tens of thousands of users reporting issues with the sites around 11:40am.

Problems were reported mainly in Europe but also in Australia, the east coast of the USA and parts of Africa, South America and Asia.

Google’s websites are some of the most popular in the world, with its video-streaming site YouTube frequented by more than two billion people every month.

Unlike other tech firms like Facebook, outages are rare at Google, DailyMail reports.

By 11:54am, there was more than 50,000 complaints for YouTube alone. with half (49 per cent) regarding issues with the website and 43 per cent pertaining to problems watching videos.

Gmail had 23,000 complaints before midday and Google’s main site had a reported 19,000 complaints.

Eighty-one and 91 per cent of the issues with these sites, respectively, was to do with logging in, according to DownDetector.

MailOnline has approached Google for comment.

Other affected sites includes Google Meet, Hangouts and the Play Store as well as the Pokemon Go game, which is made by Niantic, another Google-owned company.

It appears the outage is not uniform, with some users reporting a ‘400 error message’ while it is working fine for others.

However, a quick test at the London office of MailOnline reveals, Sheets, Gmail and YouTube are offline.

Governor Masari Orders Closure of all Public Schools After Abduction of Students

All boarding secondary schools in the Katsina state have been closed following the abduction of students by gunmen in Kankara local government area of the state.

The governor of Katsina state, Aminu Masari, gave the directive for the closure of the schools on Saturday, December 12, Premium Times reported.

Masari assured residents that the state government will do everything possible to rescue the abducted students.

He said:

“The situation goes beyond one’s thinking. It’s a sad moment for Katsina, I am assuring parents of the missing students we will do anything humanly possible to rescue the children, it’s our responsibility to protect lives and properties.”

The governor said both the federal and state governments are doing their best to bring an end to banditry in Katsina state.

He disclosed that soldiers are combing the bushes to rescue the students.

#COVID19: Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu Tests Positive For Corona Virus

Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has tested positive for COVID19.

The state Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, disclosed this on Twitter on Saturday evening, December 12.

On Friday December 11, Governor Sanwo-Olu went into isolation after one of his aides tested positive for the novel virus.

Abayomi’s statement reads;

”Following Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s exposure to a confirmed case of COVID-19, a PCR test performed yesterday, the 11th of December, has confirmed that he has indeed been infected with the virus, which is supported by mild symptoms and fatigue typical of a mild case of COVID.

Mr. Governor is receiving treatment and is being closely monitored at home by the very experienced State COVID-19 clinical team from IDH Yaba.

Mr. Sanwo-Olu is doing well on treatment and rest and we are confident that he will recover quickly and clear the virus. We are seeing slightly increasing number of COVID-19 positive cases in clusters in Lagos and all residents and visitors should strictly adhere to the prescribed advisories of safe distancing, mask-wearing, good hand and respiratory hygiene and avoidance of unnecessary or large gatherings.

The festive season is likely to create the opportunity for the virus to spread if we are not compliant with the regulations established by the Presidential Task Force (PTF) for inbound travellers and the festive season celebrations. All inbound travellers must be COVID-19 negative by PCR before they board a flight to Nigeria and must self-isolate on arrival and undergo a pre-booked test on Day Seven of arrival in Nigeria.

Lagosians should keep celebrations to a minimum and be observant and responsible in their interactions. The significant gains achieved to date in containing COVID-19 in Lagos, which has allowed us to carefully reopen the economy, must not be reversed.

No one is immune to this virus and it is certainly still circulating in the community.

Please join me in praying and wishing the Incident Commander of the Lagos State COVID-19 response, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, a speedy recovery so he can return to normal duties as soon as possible.

Biodun Fatoyinbo Spotted At Shiloh 2020, Nigerians React

Controversial Senior Pastor of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA), Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo’s presence as a guest at the annual Shiloh conference organised by the Living Faith Church Worldwide is generating controversy online.

This year’s Shiloh themed “Turnaround Encounters” holds from December 8 – 13.

Recall that Fatoyinbo was enmeshed in a rape controversy involving Busola Dakolo, the wife of popular gospel singer, Timi Dakolo, in June 2019.

She said that the popular pastor raped her twice before she turned 18.

The allegations went viral on social media, with some saying it had triggered Nigeria’s #MeToo moment.

The allegation also forced the pastor to go on “leave of absence from the pulpit” for weeks because it was the “right thing to do”.

He, however, denied any wrongdoing and has since returned to the pulpit.

Despite the controversy generated by the accusation, the cleric was at the 2019 Shiloh and repeated same this year.

In June 2020, Busola Dakolo said she was under pressure to bury the case.

Many Nigerians who took to Twitter since Wednesday when Fatoyinbo’s presence was announced said that the controversial cleric should not be attending such gatherings until the “damning” allegations against him were disproved.

Update: Lil Wayne Pleads Guilty to Federal Gun Charge

American rapper, Lil Wayne pleaded guilty on Friday to a federal charge that he possessed a weapon despite being a convicted felon, and faces up to 10 years in prison.

The rapper, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter, admitted possessing the .45 calibre gun and six rounds of ammunition after his private plane was searched on arriving in Miami from California on 23 December 2019.

A search warrant said the father-of-four told investigators the gun was a Father’s Day gift.

He entered the plea during a hearing held remotely before U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams.

“Your honor, I plead guilty to the charge,” Carter told the judge.

The federal charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years, but likely Carter will get far less time than that, according to reports. He is free on $250,000 bail but had to surrender his passport.

The charge stems from a weapons conviction for Carter in New York more than a decade ago, for which he was sentenced to eight months in prison as convicted felons are barred under federal law from possessing firearms.

Carter’s lawyer, Howard Srebnick, said he considered a motion to suppress the search of the plane as a violation of the rapper’s constitutional rights.

“I must say I thought it was a very viable motion. He has decided not to pursue a motion to suppress,” Srebnick said.

The Miami U.S. attorney’s office also said in the news release that investigators found small amounts of cocaine, ecstasy, and oxycodone in a bag belonging to Carter, but he was not charged with any drug crime.

Wayne is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 28.
