I Commend Adeleke - Obasanjo Reacts to Osun State Election

Nigeria Former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has reacted to the victory of the Osun State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and its governorship candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke, at the Election Petition Tribunal.
The State’s Election Tribunal on Friday declared Adeleke as winner of the 2018 governorship election over Oyetola of APC.

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, in a statement he personally signed on Saturday, commended Sen Adeleke for going to court to seek justice, and also criticized those discouraging the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, from going to seek redress in court, saying they are of evil mind.

Read the full Statement below;
“While I was in Dubai to attend the Global Education and Skills Forum meeting, I received the news of the judgment of the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal declaring Senator Ademola Adeleke, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the winner of the 2018 Governorship election in the state.Let me take this opportunity to commend the tribunal for its courage in nullifying what was clearly an illegality. This action by the judicial officers, albeit a first step in the legal process, gives renewed confidence in the judiciary at a time when there are coordinated efforts by some political leaders to undermine, if not destroy, it.As I have repeatedly said, the world is watching events in Nigeria with keen interest. What we do or do not do right in our electoral process will have implications not just for Nigeria but for Africa and indeed the world. By correcting what was clearly a desperate attempt to change the will of the Osun people, the tribunal has saved Nigeria from great embarrassment and started the process of saving and strengthening our democracy.Let me also commend Sen. Adeleke for his statesmanship in going to court to seek justice. This is the right and proper thing to do in any decent society. Going to court must be encouraged and not discouraged as some people are now attempting to do.While I have refrained from commenting on the 2019 elections because one of the parties has gone to court, may I point out that those who call themselves our development partners and friends and preach sacrificing justice on the altar of so-called stability are enemies of justice, democracy and Nigeria.We will continue to sustain Nigeria in stability and unity on the altar of justice, equity, fairness, freedom, human rights and democracy. Stability cannot be successfully built on injustice, corruption, inequity, and divided nation, and incompetence, nepotism and one-sidedness. Nigeria will march forward with or without those who will want to feed us with diet of values and actions that are not acceptable in their own countries.Nigeria is of age. And if Buhari could go to court three times to seek justice, even without reasonable cause, any Nigerian who feels denied of justice must feel free to go to court.Those who have conceived and are promoting the narrative that if AtikuAbubakar continues to seek legal redress there will be violence, are evil minds looking for excuse to unleash violence on Nigerians. At no time in history has sustainable peace been built on theft, injustice, corruption and inequity.These merchants of chaos and violence should have no place in any decent society. And they must know that no intimidation or prophesy of violence and doomsday will cow anybody. Nigeria belongs to all Nigerians. We will respect as friends those who believe that what is good for their country should be good for Nigeria.Yes, we are Africans but we have values that are consistent with international standards. Court is part of our democratic process and it must be used when necessary if only to achieve justice, stability, unity and progress for our country.”

Underground Plans Ongoing To Sack Emir of Kano & Sultan of Sokoto

According to a group that is almost 90% correct each time they reveal secrets, the Coalition of United Political Parties on (CUPP), there were plans to depose the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, and the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, by the ruling APC.
It said some chieftains of the APC in Sokoto and Kano states were behind the move.

The coalition’s spokesman, Imo Ugochinyere, made the allegation in a statement in Abuja yesterday.

Ugochinyere claimed that the decision to depose the traditional rulers was taken because of their decision not to take sides in the supplementary elections holding in the states on Saturday.

According to his words, he said;

“The Coalition of United Political Parties has once again intercepted credible intelligence of a fresh plot by APC chieftains in Kano and Sokoto with the full support of Adams Oshiomhole against the Sultan of Sokoto and Emir of Kano.
We are alerting Nigerians to the plot and threats by the leaders of the All Progressives Congress to depose the revered Sultan of Sokoto and the Emir of Kano for refusing to bow to pressure to take sides in the supplementary governorship elections in Kano and Sokoto states.
The grouse of the leaders of the ruling party is that the respected traditional rulers refused to intervene and interfere to galvanise support for the sinking APC in Sokoto and Kano states.
Leaders of the APC are accusing the monarchs of allegedly taking sides with the Peoples Democratic Party and hence they have hatched a plot that if the traditional rulers do not help them to win the people’s support and they succeed to manipulate the election, that they will dethrone the respected traditional rulers from the thrones of their forefathers.We make bold to say that this is a lie from the pit of hell. The Emir and Sultan are rather appealing for calm and for the will of the people to be respected.
Leaders of the ruling party are boasting and threatening that if they win, they will force them out by setting up state House of Assembly panel to indict them for corruption and force them out using presidential support. They are also considering the use of the CJN option against these respected monarchs.”

Election Is Not a Battlefield - Onaiyekan React to Election Violence

The outgoing Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, His Eminence John Cardinal Onaiyekan, on Monday frowned at the violence and militarisation of the polls across the nation.

He said election is supposed to be an opportunity for Nigerians to choose their leaders, and not a battlefield.

Onaiyekan said this at the opening mass homily of the 1st Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria and the Dedication of St Gabriel Chapel Building at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Durumi, Abuja.

According to Onaiyekan, he said;
“Elections are supposed to be an opportunity for us to choose those who will serve us. In many cases, it has been turned into battlefield for warriors fighting to capture power and conquer territory and people.
No wonder it has become such a do or die affair- winner takes it all. No wonder the process has been militarised with armed thugs engaging our security forces, who in their turn are rarely able to be as fair and professional as they claim to be. No wonder votes often no longer count.
When this happens, it is not only the losing contestant who alleges fraud. More significantly, it is the people, the voter, who is denied the once in four years opportunity to choose who will serve us as political leaders.
If the name of the political game does not change from domination to service, elections will continue to be problematic and the nation will continue to stagnate”.
He however charged those who won in the elections to always discharge their duties, having in mind that power belongs to God alone and He would demand for accountability on how power is used.

Read below;
“Whatever the outcome of our elections, fair or foul, whoever holds power at the end of the day, even with the fairest of election victory, must remember that power belongs to God and Him alone.
He will demand strict accountability on how anyone takes power, and how anyone uses power. God cannot be deceived or challenged”.
He warned that bad governance would not lead to good governance.

Onaiyekan also said the voter apathy and boycott that almost marred the march 9 Governorship and States House of Assembly was as a protest and a vote of no confidence of the electoral process by the electorates.
