COVID-19: Nigerian Government Tackles Bill Gates On Vaccine Issues

Contrary to the claims of the co-founder of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr. Bill Gates, Nigerian Government has said that investing in procurement of COVID-19 vaccine would not only help in the fight against the coronavirus, but will also help to strengthen the nation’s primary health care system in the long run.

Dr Faisal Shuaib, Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), said this on Friday in obvious response to assertion by Gates during an interview session with journalists last Tuesday.

The Bill and Melinda Gates co-founder had told the newsmen that Nigerian government should rather invest the funds it has set aside for procurement of COVID-19 to put the country’s primary health care system on a stronger footing.

“There is no doubt that the impact of putting money into the health system particularly the primary healthcare system will be very high in terms of saving children’s lives. Nigeria should not divert the very limited money that it has for health into trying to pay a high price for COVID-19 vaccines,” the Micrsoft founder said while responding to question on federal government’s plans to invest about N400 billion in procurement of vaccine.

The Microsoft founder also noted that Nigeria will get free vaccine from the COVAX facility initiative being coordinated by the GAVI Vaccine Alliance set up to ensure equitable access to to the COVID-19 vaccine and as such, there is no need for the country to raise funds to procure the medical commodity.

But while disagreeing with Gates, Dr Shuaib said the structure and skills that will be acquired by the country through the administration of COVID-19 vaccine will contribute to the strengthening of the nation’s healthcare system in the long run.

Shuaib, whose agency is in charge of vaccine administration and primary healthcare at the national level in Nigeria, said this in an interview with News Agency of of Nigeria (NAN), in Abuja.

He noted for instance that engagement of additional healthcare workers to administer the vaccine would ensure non-disruption of routine services.

The NPHCDA boss also noted that the intensive capacity building and the acquisition of new and additional cold chain equipment will, on the other hand, contribute immensely to strengthening the PHC system.

Shuaib said long after the country had overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, the lessons learnt, new skills acquired by health workers and the infrastructural improvements would place the country in a better stead to manage future pandemics.

“This holistic approach to health system strengthening, which is driven through the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, is based on global standards and is in line with observations and recommendations recently made by our donors and development partners.

“Any idea or report that says this approach does not prioritise strengthening of the health system, stems from a lack of complete understanding of the health system and should be disregarded,” he said.

He added that while Nigeria was appreciative of the global effort, through the COVAX facility, the delay in accessing vaccines meant that eligible countries would have to explore all channels, that could ensure fair prices, safe and effective vaccines for its populace.

“This is why the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, is also engaged with the African Union, through the African Vaccine Acquisition Task Team.

“The Federal Government is committed to securing the much-needed COVID-19 vaccines, taking into consideration safety, efficacy, cost and required logistics, to stop ongoing community transmission of the virus.

“As the country awaits the arrival of the first batch of COVID-19 vaccine in February, the PTF has called on State governments to put all the necessary logistics in place to ensure a successful vaccination exercise,” he said.

He added that traditional leaders in the country had pledged their support for the COVID-19 vaccine in the country, urging the Federal Government to procure adequate quantities of the vaccine to meet the needs of the country.

“His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto, has also urged Nigerians to get vaccinated as soon as safe, effective and NAFDAC certified vaccines are available,” he said.

The NPHCDA boss also urged Nigerians to disregard rumours about the safety of the vaccine, and rely only on information from credible sources for decision making.

Many thanked her for her “legacy”, one calling her a “non-cape wearing hero”.

Indomie has become almost synonymous with instant noodles in Indonesia, where many have grown up eating the popular brand.

I Can’t Blame Fulani People For Burning Down My House – Sunday Igboho says

Sunday Igboho has told Peoples Gazette that he was not in a hurry to blame any individual or group for the arson that razed down his property in Ibadan on Tuesday morning.

Sunday Igboho, whose real name is Sunday Adeyemo, said he would allow authorities to conduct investigation into the incident, praising God that there were no injuries or fatalities.

In his words, says;

“I can not blame anyone right now for the attack, not even Fulani people, We have to thank God that nobody died, it is more important.”

Reports had it that a property owned by Sunday Igboho was set ablaze on Tuesday morning in Soka neighborhood of Ibadan.

He told the Gazette he moved out of the property about a year ago to a new property also in Soka.

He has been at the centre of a controversial directive for Fulani herdsmen to vacate vast lands in Oyo State. His action was condemned by President Muhammadu Buhari, who ordered police to use lethal force against him and his followers if necessary.

It was not immediately clear those responsible for the attack, which could potentially escalate ongoing tension around Fulani herders in southern Nigeria.

A police spokesman in Oyo said he was not aware of the fire.

‘Why Bullets Fired At Me In Seriki Fulani’s Place in Ibarapa Did Not Harm Me’ – Sunday Igboho Revealed

Igboho identified another victim as Dr Fatai Aborode, who returned from overseas and started farming in Igangan but was killed by herdsmen.

An Oodua Republic agigator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has narrated how bullets were fired at him at the home of the Seriki of Fulani in Ibarapa, Oyo State, and did not harm him.

Igboho added that suspected Fulani herdsmen killing and kidnapping people in the South-West had done enough and should leave.

Speaking in an interview with popular broadcaster, Kola Olootu, in Oyo State on the notice to quit given to herdsmen ravaging the Ibarapa area of Oke Ogun, Oyo State, Igboho said the gunshots allegedly fired at him failed to harm him.

He described it as a demonstrarion of the efficacy of Yoruba traditional power.

He said, “This is not an issue that affects Sunday Igboho but a matter of concern to the entire Yoruba race. I am saying it pointedly that I am too strong for Fulani bandits to attack or capture, so this matter is not about me at all.

“I don’t have a child who would be kidnapped by Fulani men because my children are not even based in the country.

“When gunshots were fired at me during the visit to the Seriki in Igangan, the bullets did not penetrate (harm me). That shows the efficacy of the Yoruba traditional power.

“It would not be a hard nut for the Yoruba people to crack, rather the evil marauders killing and maiming our people would be visited with retribution as God lives.

“The reason for that was the incessant attacks on our people in the Ibarapa and Oke Ogun areas of the (Oyo) state. Our people are no longer safe in their own land. On the contrary, Yoruba people don’t engage in such atrocious things. You cannot see a Yoruba man going about killing people in Kano.

“In the North, they can behead a Yoruba man for slapping a Hausa/Fulani let alone destroy their farmland. You will recall the case of ‘Oko Oloyun’ (a popular herbal medicine trader) who was killed during a visit to his country house. He was killed at Igbo Ora. The government said it would unravel the facts behind his killing but till now, the matter has not been unravelled. That killing would clock up a year this month.”

Igboho identified another victim as Dr Fatai Aborode, who returned from overseas and started farming in Igangan but was killed by herdsmen.

“He employed about 300 people. When his farm was plundered by cattle, he lodged a complaint with the Seriki Fulani. Few days after, killer herdsmen kidnapped him, tied him and butchered him. Nothing was done and no arrest was made.

“That was the story that we heard. After that, they also killed a woman, an Alhaja, a native of Imeko who brought the ransom. Many like that had been killed, including the son to Oba Abdulazeez Adeoye of Igangan. Before getting to Seriki’s residence, you have to pass through three local security checkpoints.

“Now, we are determined to defend our people, but they say we don’t have the right to do so. Some people alleged that I’m doing this to gain cheap popularity; far from it. Some even said perhaps I’m trying to do it to enrich myself, but that is not also correct. The fact is that I am a rich man. I am not seeking favour from the government because I’m a contented person. I don’t need money or favour from the government, but I am from Ibarapa.”

Igboho had been in the news since last week when he gave an ultimatum to killer herdsmen to vacate Oyo State.

Days after, violence erupted in the area during which the houses and property of the Seriki Fulani, Alhaji Saliu Abdulkadir, were burnt.

Abdulkadir had told SaharaReporters that he, his wives and children were sent out of the settlement, adding that 11 vehicles and houses were burnt in the process.

The Seriki had thereafter fled the community with his family, as aggrieved youths put fire to the settlement.

Speaking with SaharaReporters, Igboho’s Personal Assistant, Salami Oladapo, had said that neither his principal nor his supporters were responsible for the arson.
