Nigeria May Experience COVID-19 Virus Explosion in Low Testing States- NCDC Warns

Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has warned that Nigeria may experience an explosion in the number of COVID-19.

Speaking in a TV interview in Abuja, Ihekweazu said a second wave of the virus is inevitable in Nigeria. He urged all states in Nigeria to increase the number of testing as some people might be positive and still asymptomatic.

A few days ago, the NCDC listed nine states that have tested the least number of samples for COVID-19. Among the states are Taraba, Adamawa, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa and Yobe

Ihekweazu in the interview said

“The data is what it is. We are having fewer cases reported than we had in April, May and the numbers are what they are. The states where we are most comfortable with are the states like Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kano and Borno. This is because they are testing a lot and not finding as many as they used to find.

“A few months ago, we used to have a test positivity ratio of up to 20 per cent to 25 per cent in Lagos – that is 20 per cent of all the samples we collected were positive. Now, that figure is down to five per cent. So, we are happy with the progress made in Lagos.

“In some other states, they are not testing enough, because they are not finding cases. It becomes impossible for us to say whether that is a reflection that there are really no cases or it is just a reflection that they are not testing.

“We have been reaching out to states to let them know that the national curve that we show every day is really a reflection of several sub-national curves. Some states have reacted positively and have started testing more.

“A perfect example of that is Plateau State. Initially very slow, but now they have started testing more and have found more cases which is a good thing. Now, they know where they are. Many states, unfortunately, haven’t learnt from that and are not testing and finding enough. I’m worried that we might find an explosion in those states that will then affect the rest of the country again.

“Ultimately, the sample collection and mobilisation efforts within states have to be driven by states. Until they see the benefits of testing more in order to define for themselves where they are, we will be in this position of not having a full certainty of where we are in the trajectory of the outbreak in Nigeria.”

Speaking further, Ihekweazu said

“All of us are trying to avoid the lockdown not just in Nigeria but across the world. Countries are working very hard to find ways to avoid a lockdown because we have all seen what it can do to our economy. The impact of this outbreak on the Nigerian economy will be felt for years to come.

So, we have to try to avoid that scenario again. Avoiding that scenario means moving away from almost a government-led response to where everyone takes a little bit more responsibility.

As we move towards reopening our schools, there will be increased opportunities for transmission because students will come together. We know that we’re opening our air space, and have opened ourselves up to some increase in infection. Therefore, we carried out the very stringent mitigation measures – testing before and on arrival.

We see a lot of easing up on insistence on these measures by institutions that have the capacity to insist on it. Let us forget about the people walking on the streets, but let us talk about banks. If I go into a bank now, I see fewer people wearing a mask, yet there is a manager in that bank that can insist that these measures are carried out. If you go to our religious places, the people are not wearing masks anymore, yet there is a pastor or somebody in-charge that can implement this.

“The second wave is not inevitable but we can avoid it. It can’t be done by government lockdowns, but it can only be achieved in a sustainable way if we come together as a society.”

Davido Sits on the Floor in Shock after Young Boy Performed Magic on Him and Mayorkun (Video)

Davido met with Babs Cardini, a famous young magician yesterday when they finished performing on BBNaija stage.

If you could recall that Babs Cardini and Davido both performed on stage yesterday before the winner was announced.

Meanwhile, it seems Davido got some dose of Magic tricks from Babs Cardini and Davido’s reaction was mind blowing, Davido sat on the ground for minutes because he was very surprised.

Babs Cardini played a little card trick with Davido and one of his crew, they knew the cards they picked but somehow, the cards interchanged and the card that Davido’s crew member was holding was found in Davido’s hand and vise versa. Davido was suprised as he walked away from the boy to give him space.

This boy also asked Davido and Mayorkun to stand together but give each other gap. He told Davido to close his eyes and told Mayorkun to open his eyes while his crew members stood and watched the drama that’s about to happen. This young boy now proceeded to tap Mayorkun’s hand twice and asked Davido (whose eyes was closed) that how many times did he tap his hands, Davido suprisingly got it right and said two times.

Checkout Kunle Afolayan Response to Mike Ezuruonye’s Allegations

Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has responded to actor Mike Ezuruonye’s allegation of being anti-Igbo by sharing a DM screenshot in which he (Mike) was tagged a fraudster.

Making a clarification on why he shared the post, Kunle Afolayan said he intended to “jocularly send a message to purveyors of fake news and unproven allegations that they should free him and by extension his other colleagues of such mindless allegations.”

He added that he did not just share the message to subtly disprove such accusations but to send a signal that he frowns against such intrusive messages.

On being anti-Igbo, Kunle stated that the “array of star colleagues and subject matters treated in his films, in addition to the staff in his workforce and friends in and out of Nollywood will easily put a lie to the cheap anti-Igbo toga that Mike has pitiable tried to dress him with.”

Kunle also shared his DM exchange with Mike Ezuruonye .

He wrote;

“Mole, Mountain and My Brother Mike Ezuruonye

I’m compelled to publicly offer a response to Mike Ezuruonye’s diatribe against my person.

On Thursday, I shared on my Instagram timeline a message posted on my comment section about an unfounded insinuation of his involvement in scams.

With a message in Yoruba, which I inscribed on the post: “E gba mi o. Ewo n temi?” (Spare me, what’s my own) I had shared the post on my timeline with the intention to jocularly send a message to purveyors of fake news and unproven allegations that they should free me and by extension my other colleagues of such mindless allegations.

It was not just a message to subtly disprove such accusations but to send a signal that I frown against such intrusive messages.

Sadly, my colleague and brother took it badly even after exchange of private messages to explain the harmless intention behind my post.

Not only has he called me out openly and making a social media feast of his disavowal, he has also accused me of being anti-Igbo.

He is wrong!

While my apology to him subsists, because it’s only fair; it is pathetic of him to bring needless ethnic sentiment into a mere molehill of an issue that can’t be fancied as a mountain.

To me, it didn’t matter that the sender of that message is apparently Igbo. What’s important is that my post drew no negative comments until Mike decided to raise the roof.

To dissppoint Mike and other ethnic jingoists, this molehill issue isn’t enough for me to climb the rooftop to shout my detribalised Nigerian nature. The array of star colleagues and subject matters treated in my films, in addition to the staff in my workforce and friends in and out of Nollywood that i associate with, will easily put a lie to the cheap anti-Igbo toga that Mike has pitiable tried to dress me with.

My utmost regard is always reserved for him as a man of honour and large heart that I knew him to be.

Ire
Kunle Afolayan
