Tragedy: Delta Traditional Ruler Dies After Being Shot By Assassins (See Photos)

The people of Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, have been thrown into mourning following the shocking death of their traditional ruler HRM, Engr. Michael Oviese, who was allegedly shot by suspected assassins two weeks ago.

The monarch who was shot around his lower abdomen, died on Tuesday in an undisclosed hospital where he had been receiving treatment.

He had been attacked by gunmen numbering five at a building along a street near St Michaels College, Oleh, by hoodlums who attempted to dispossess him of his car, as he personally drove himself to visit a closed ally in the area.

In the midst of the scuffle, the gunmen shot him in his stomach and fled the scene. It was gathered that the demise of the monarch was being kept from the public for traditional reasons as palace chiefs continue to keep mum over the incident.

A source who spoke with Punch, said, “The people of Irri Kingdom are mourning. Our traditional ruler is dead. He died of gun shots’ injuries when he was attacked by suspected hired assassins. Because of traditional rites, his death has not been officially announced.

“Only members of the immediate family are aware of the sad development. He died at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) where has been receiving treatment. His death would be formally announced by the palace in line with the tradition of Irri Kingdom.”

A source at the Oleh Divisional Police Station confirmed the incident but added that it was only the palace that can announce his death.

EFCC Arrested Female Herbalist For Allegedly N45m Fraud (See Photos)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibadan zonal office, Oyo State, on Thursday said a herbalist was arrested by its operatives for falsely obtaining N45m from a victim under the pretext of offering herbal and spiritual healing.

The suspect, Aminat Okiribiti, 34, committed the crime with two other accomplices at large, one of who is said to be her husband.

A statement by EFCC Head of Public Affairs in the zone, Ayo Oyewole, said, “Aminat (Okiribiti) was arrested for an alleged case of conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretences. In a rehash of the old infamous advance fee fraud tactic of spiritual help and solution to all problems, a victim recounted her ordeal in the hands of a syndicate to our operatives, signalling a warning to the public.

“Aminat, alongside other three cohorts still at large, conspired, using the decoy of providing cure and spiritual solution to the health challenges of the victim’s children and fleeced her of the sum of N45m.

“Aminat, who is married to one Wande Okiribiti, 47, who is still at large, confessed that some of the money obtained from the victim was collected through her (Aminat’s) bank account domiciled in one of the new generation banks located in Ibadan.”

The statement said Aminat and the victim met sometime in October 2014, at Utako, Abuja, adding that the suspect would be charged to court at the end of investigation.

Court Sentenced Father Who Impregnating Daughter To 9 Years Jail

A man, Taiwo Olubayode, has been sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment with hard labour by a family court sitting at Oke-Eda, Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The 56-year-old was convicted for impregnating his 16-year-old daughter on Oke-Ijebu Street, Odode-Idanre, in Idanre Local Government Area of the state.

The convict, who was brought before the court by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, was charged with one count of having incestuous relationship with his daughter.

The offence is contrary to and punishable under sections 31 (1) and 31 (2) of the Ondo State Child’s Right Law of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, 2007.

Olubayode pleaded not guilty to the charge on his first arraignment. He was later found guilty by the family court.

NSCDC prosecuting officer, Mr. Ebriku David, told the court that the victim and her boss reported the case to the NSCDC’s office in Idanre, when it was discovered that the girl was pregnant.

According to him, the case was transferred to the Akure division of the corps, where the victim informed the command that her father was responsible for the pregnancy.

David also told the court that the convict had earlier confessed at the NSCDC office that he committed the offence.

In her ruling, the magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Edwin, ruled that Olubayode was guilty of the charge and sentenced him to nine years’ imprisonment with hard labour without option of fine.

The magistrate said it was a shame that the convict had an incestuous affair with his own daughter.
